May 27, 2006 Noble
Project Dedication Event:
On Saturday, May 27, 2006 at dusk, solar-powered light panels will be
dedicated in the City of Orlando’s Greenwood Cemetery. This is possible as a
result of the Marine Corps League’s “Noble Project”, named because it is a
‘noble idea’ originated by our Junior Vice Commandant Steve Noble. Steve
worked selflessly to raise money to purchase solar lighting for each of the
four Veteran sections of the cemetery having flag poles. Flags have not
flown due to lack of manpower, now they can fly 24 hours every day.
The dedication will begin at 7:00 p.m., with the raising of the 45-star
American flag in the Spanish-American War section. At 7:15 p.m., the Bonnie
Blue flag (blue flag with one white star) will be raised in the Confederate
section; and at 7:30 p.m., the 39-star American flag will be raised in the
Union section. Most people will arrive for the raising of these three other
flags, but everyone is welcome to attend these flag raisings.
At 7:45 p.m. all of the re-enactors from the three previous flag raisings
will congregate at the flagpole in the American Legion section, which honors
WWI/II, Korea, and Vietnam war memorials. The 50-star American flag will be
raised by the U.S. Marine Corps, Orlando I-I Staff.
The program will run from 7:45 p.m. until dusk (approximately 8:15 p.m.)
when the solar-powered lights at the flags will be flipped on by Junior Vice
Commandant Steve Noble.
The program will begin with a patriotic medley by the Daughters of the
American Revolution All American Singers. Other music will include the
National Anthem being sung by Charles Haugabrooks and the playing of TAPS.
Bud Hedinger of 540 AM will be our emcee.
Remarks will be made by Fred Carr, PR Officer for the Marine Corps League
and the presentation of the flag will be made by Greenwood Cemetery Sexton
Donald Price. The invocation will be made by Reverend Robert W. Miller of
the Marine Corps League and the welcome will be made by Commandant James M.
Bacon.
Now our permanently retired Veterans will be able to feel their Nation
watching over them every hour of every day.
This event is free to anyone who wishes to attend. If you have questions,
please email gert.garman@cityoforlando.net. Greenwood Cemetery is located at
1603 Greenwood Street, east of Mills Avenue and south of the East-West
Expressway (State Road 408).
